Matthew Kovar: July Member of the Month
Matt is our Member of the Month for July! He is being honored for his consistency and energy. Matt mostly comes to our early morning classes, but that doesn’t mean you won’t see him hit the occasional 10:30am, 2:30pm, or even our 5:30pm and 6:30pm WODs. He makes working out a priority and is in the gym 5 days a week almost every week!
1) How did you get started with CrossFit? What was the primary driving factor?
At the time, my neighbor said, “you should try CrossFit.” I said, “OK,” and never tried it. Then, my girlfriend (now wife) bought me an intro class, so I tried it and haven’t stopped since. My drive to keep going were the challenging movements (e.g. snatches), variability in the workouts, and being around people that had similar motivations/goals. The workouts kept kicking my ass and they still continue to do so.
2) What are your goals for the upcoming 2018 CrossFit year?
The past couple years have brought a couple significant changes into my life: more work responsibilities and kids (2 to be exact). With the hustle and bustle now, my main goal is to just make into the gym consistently and maintain my current strength.
3) What has been your biggest challenge you have had to overcome since starting CrossFit?
Work, life, and fitness balance. I could literally do fitness things all day!
4) What is your favorite CrossFit Workout/Movement?
Squat clean (heavy)
6) What advice can you give to those just starting out in CrossFit?
Be patient, listen to the coaches, listen to your body, and master the basic mechanics. As CrossFit training puts it: Mechanics, consistency, then intensity. It takes a lot of time to get used to/master many of the movements we do in CrossFit. Don’t expect instant results.
7) Lastly… what is your most memorable moment in Crossfit?
I don’t really have a “most memorable moment.” I think every moment is memorable, unless you go to that really dark place in a WOD or completely blackout!!
A couple additions for the Member of the Month Workout.
Whats your birthday?
May 19, 1984
Whats your lucky number?
I don’t really have one, but let’s say 27.
Do you like endurance style wods or strength style wods?
Strength (specifically when the weight is a percentage of body weight)AMRAPs or For Time? For Time ( I really like 10, 9… 1 rep schemes)
