Melissa Schmierbach has been a member of CrossFit Sanitas for over 4 years now! She is an amazing member of our community, showing up consistently every week. Her only hiatus was recovering from giving birth to her son, Huxley – a little man known for his amazing hair! Melissa is strong, and we’re always impressed by her ability to push the limit on tough endurance WODs.
1) How did you get started with CrossFit?
After college, my lifestyle as an opera singer meant long days and late night hours of rehearsing, accompanied with a lot of bad eating habits. I had gained about 45lbs, and my self confidence was at an all time low. I went on a drastic diet and took up running and yoga and lost a significant amount of weight, but I struggled with finding the right balance to maintain a healthy weight without micro-managing calories, and had a lot of body image issues.
I started hearing more and more about Crossfit, and curiosity eventually got the better of me. For the first time in my life, I put on lean muscle and stopped obsessing over calories and the scale. I learned to listen to my body, stopped apologizing for my muscular build, and started to embrace my power and strength.
2) What are your fitness goals in the upcoming year?
This year, my goal was to start pushing myself out of my comfort zone again, since having my son in April 2017. I wanted to participate in my first competition post-baby (I completed Tuff Love in February), and to start re-mastering skills that I lost during pregnancy, like double-unders, handstand push-ups, and pull-ups.
3) What’s been your biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome?
When I was pregnant, I found that I had a lot more ego than I realized. It was really hard for me to hold back and modify, and made me feel like less of an athlete. The coaches provided an incredible amount of feedback and advice for how to safely participate, and the fellow athletes in the gym provided constant encouragement, which helped tremendously.
4) What’s your favorite CrossFit workout/movement?
Pull-ups (in small sets), and handstand push-ups, because they’ve both taken a lot of work for me to get back, and continue to be such a challenge.
5) What is your least Favorite CrossFit workout/movement?
That f’ing bike.
6) What advice can you give to those just starting CrossFit?
Celebrate all the little victories along the way. It can be a slow progression, but trust the process, and know that we have THE best coaches, who will give you the most solid foundation that you can continue to build on for many years to come.
7) What’s your most memorable CrossFit moment?
My most memorable moment isn’t actually workout-related, it’s about the birth of my son. He was born almost 8 weeks premature, and my husband and I spent 20 days in the NICU with him. We don’t have any family in town, and throughout that period, this community cared for us in so many ways: bringing meals, thoughtful gifts, and just sending words of encouragement.
When I returned to the gym when Huxley was 6 weeks old, I was so nervous. I was welcomed with open arms, invited to bring him with, and again, lifted up by this community. This gym is part of his ‘normal’, and I’m so glad he gets to witness the amazing things that happen within these walls.
