Jessie has been a member of CrossFit Sanitas for the past 3.5 years! She is constantly looking to improve and develop new skills. Jessie brings the fire to the gym and is always cheering those on around her. She is as concerned about how others are doing as she is herself. Jessie uses her fitness both in and out of the gym; going on hikes, doing Tough Mudders, and constantly staying active. We are excited and lucky to have her as a member in our community and she truly embodies what is great about the community here at CrossFit Sanitas.
We asked Jessie a few questions about what CrossFit Sanitas means to her and here were her answers!
1) How did you get started with CrossFit? What was the primary driving factor?
I started Crossfit when my youngest was 7 months old. I was anxious and depressed, and knew I needed to do something for myself–mind, body and spirit. I remember wearing baggy t-shirts and long yoga pants to the gym, and crying after workouts because they were so demanding and because motherhood had transformed my body and I was no longer comfortable in my own skin. Over time I realized how supportive and amazing the coaches at Sanitas are, and I started to feel connected to the community. At first, I promised myself I’d come no less than 3 times a week for 2 months no matter how hard it was, which turned into 6 months, which turned into 4-6 times a week for the last several years and I’ve never looked back. The driving factors are health and sanity!
2) What are your goals for the upcoming 2017/2018 CrossFit year?
My goal is to stay injury free this year, and to keep loving Crossfit. Specifically, I’d love to improve my ring dips and strict pull ups and get a strict ring muscle up.
3) What has been your biggest challenge you have had to overcome since starting CrossFit?
Life! Like all of us, juggling kids and work and kids’ activities, etc. is overwhelming. I’m SO incredibly grateful for the times I’ve been able to use child care, or for Tom or Dwight or any coach/community member who’s kept a side eye out with me while my kids hang on the couches and I’m working out. It can be hard to prioritize myself when so many other people need me–but if I don’t do it, who will?!
4) What is your favorite CrossFit Workout/Movement?
Cleans or barbell complexes that involve cleans 😉
5) What is your least Favorite CrossFit Workout/Movement?
TTB or Double unders!!!
6) What advice can you give to those just starting out in CrossFit?
My best advice would be to embrace it and embrace yourself. Accept where you are, own where you want to be, and show up! Everyone is right there with you working to get better, and hopefully what we learn about grit and humility and community in the box makes us better “out there.”
7) Lastly… what is your most memorable moment in Crossfit?
That time I was last in the WOD and had 50 air squats to go and thought I was going to die, and Colleen, who’d already finished, did them with me. Or the time a few weeks ago when I had a 600m left to run and Stacey could see the struggle on my face, and she ran by my side and pushed me to go faster.– To me, those moments say it all. I feel so grateful to have Crossfit and Crossfit Sanitas!
