April Member of the Month: Eric Meyer

Eric has been a member of CrossFit Sanitas for over 3 years — he comes in, works hard, stays consistent, and keeps a very rigorous schedule. Often times you will see Eric do the Main WOD at 5:30am, quickly jump on the Ski Erg and do some mileage, and then jump right into the Endurance Class at 6:30am. Eric is also a competitive cross-country skier and has been able to combine his training at Sanitas with long ski races on the weekend.

During this year’s CrossFit Open, he placed 109th in the 40-44 age group, qualifying him for the next stage on the way to the CrossFit Games! He pretty much went the whole Open without knowing he was even accomplishing this impressive feat.

Member Spotlight

1) How did you get started with CrossFit? What was the primary driving factor?

I got started when I was looking for a different challenge than just training for cross-country ski races.

2) What are your goals for the upcoming 2019 CrossFit year?

My goals are to get biceps like Coach Butts and quads like Coach Pestello. The next goal is to stay fit and give the younger athletes a mark to beat for the day when I have to WOD at the 5:30 am class. The final goal of 2019 is take the next step in education with eating. I can now stop the beer, carbs, added sugar when needed but do not pay attention to the amounts of macros. I look forward to making that commitment happen and seeing how it might correlate to my fitness level.

3) What has been your biggest challenge you have had to overcome since starting CrossFit?

My biggest challenge I am still overcoming is gymnastic movements and Olympic lifting. Cross-country ski hips really don’t help when snatching. As with all skills, this just takes time on task and small improvements each day. Another challenge I learned over the years is to be mindful of weights I choose — trying to match others when I’m not ready only leads to injury.

4) What is your favorite CrossFit Workout/Movement?

Ski Erg followed by anything burpee.

5) What is your least Favorite CrossFit Workout/Movement?

Ring MU, Snatch, Clean & Jerk.

6) What advice can you give to those just starting out in CrossFit?

Enjoy the process. CrossFit Sanitas has superior coaching and programming. Do the little things correctly and you can reach your goals but be sure to tell the coaches or your friends what your goals are to keep yourself honest. Also, please realize I still fail more often than I succeed at workouts and that is the joy of CrossFit. Learn from yesterday and give it a new go today.

7) Lastly… what is your most memorable moment in CrossFit?

For me it is watching people give their best every day. I might not interact with you individually, but:

I enjoy getting into a rhythm with someone across the floor during the 5:30 pm class.

I enjoy the bond the 5:30 am class has to show up daily and give it all even when I personally feel it is 25% harder to do anything that early.

I enjoy the endurance crew especially when it gets heavier than expected.

I enjoy watching the strength class do four to five workouts in a row.

I enjoy seeing the comp group out of the corner of my eye during a WOD seeing how strong they actually are.

I enjoy seeing the smiles in the kids/teen class all without a device in their hands.

I enjoy seeing little kids come out of the daycare room getting to hang on the rings or do a burpee because they saw their mom or dad do one.

I enjoy how many people are at the 2:30 class knowing I should probably be at work and liking Boulder for the flexibility.

I enjoy the unique coaching styles we all get at CrossFit Sanitas on a daily basis that makes me want to come suffer more.

  • What’s your birthday? 3/4/78
  • What’s your lucky number? 5
  • Do you like endurance style or strength style workouts? Mixed. Nothing like a mile run after some heavy squat cleans.
  • AMRAPs or For Time? AMRAP – I like finding out if you can hold the 1st round pace or need to find a way to adjust when fatigue sets in.
