What is the CrossFit Open?
In short, the CrossFit Open is the first of a 2 part competition that ultimately determines who competes at the CrossFit Games each year. Does that mean that the CrossFit Open is only for those that are trying to make it to the CrossFit Games? No, it does not. The CrossFit Open has two divisions. The Open Division and the Scaled Division and makes it accessible to 100s of 1000s of individuals worldwide.
The Open is a 5 week competition consisting of 5 workouts that are meant to test a broad base of time domains and movement patterns to test overall work capacity. Every Thursday night at 6pm Mountain Standard Time, Dave Castro (Director of the Crossfit Games) announces the workout for the week. It is then performed by those competing in the Open from that time on Thursday Night until Monday at 6pm Mountain Standard Time. This gives athletes the ability to perform the workout on any day during that time and they are allowed to perform the workout as many times as they would like in that time frame.

Registration for the Open begins Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018.
The Open is the first stage of the CrossFit Games season and the largest community event of the year. Every year, hundreds of thousands of athletes come together to compete in the worldwide, online competition.
Anyone aged 14 or older can compete. All you have to do is sign up at Games.CrossFit.com and log your score each week. Workouts are released on Thursdays at 5 p.m. PT, and athletes have four days to complete the workout for the week and submit their score. Scores are due before 5 p.m. PT the following Monday. Complete the workouts at a CrossFit affiliate with a judge, or film your effort from anywhere in the world and submit a link as proof.
The Open offers two versions of each workout, scaled and Rx’d. The scaled option makes the event all-inclusive. All athletes can compare their results to others worldwide, regionally, by age or within their own gyms. An official CrossFit Games app will be available in late January, which will focus on your own personal performance in the Open.
At the end of five weeks, the fittest move on to the next stages of competition: the Regionals and the Online Qualifier”
Friday Night Lights and Team Competition at CrossFit Sanitas!
This year CrossFit Sanitas is bringing on a little fun internal competition between members and Coaches here at CrossFit Sanitas. This does not mean that you have to kill the open in order to help your team score. There will be multiple scoring criteria that will dictate the best team during The 2018 CrossFit Open. How will this work and what does this mean for you?
Every Friday will be the Open Workout that is announced on Thursday night. Classes will run as they normally do on the 1/2 from 5:30am-12:30pm. We will be keeping strength as is on Friday’s as well at 6:15am and 11:15am for those that are not doing the Open and are still looking to just build overall foundational strength.
From 1:30pm-3:00pm there will be an open gym time slot where we are having nothing going on midday, so that there is a calm before the storm. From 3:00pm-7:00pm on Friday we will be running heats and having a fun weekly competition. Those wishing to compete will also need to get your judges cert, which the coaches can help you with and lead you in the right direction in order to do so. The reason for the judges cert is so that you can get judged and then judge the next heat to follow. The judges cert is completed online and can be done in under an hour. During the week we will have heat sign-ups for those competing so that all the logistics and structure of Friday is set out ahead of time. (note: heat times are subject to change by a few minutes here and there depending on what the workout is.)
*****Those wishing to get judged and compete in the CrossFit Open must either sign-up and come in for Friday Night Lights, or are responsible for finding a friend and completing the workout at some other time early on Friday or throughout the weekend in order to put your score in for the week******
If you are thinking about competing in this years Open please do so early because this year we are having a Draft!! Once we have the member sign-up for the Open the Coaches are going to get together and hold a draft night where we pick our teams based on those competing in the Open. After the Draft we will then have a team meeting and decide on a Team Captain for each team (a member will be Team Captain).
That Team Captain primary role is to talk to the members of the team and decide on the weekly theme for that week and decide on snacks and refreshments to bring for those competing in Friday Nights Lights! The gym will give a $100 per diem for the team to bring refreshments and snacks each week. Because there are 5 nights during the Open there will be 5 teams. You will be selected by 1 of 5 coaches (Dwight, Antonio, Elisa, Laura, or Elissa). Each team will be responsible for 1 of the 5 nights.
Criteria for Challenge
- Participation: How many members of your team showed up Friday night, logged scores, judged other athlete, etc.
- Team Spirit: dressed in Themed apparel (we will keep this fun and workout friendly, i.e. 90s hip hop, 80s rock band…)
- Total Team Score for the workout each week.
There will be individual awards each week for “Best Dressed”, “Best Judge”, and “Top Performer of the Week” (the top performer does not mean top score, but he individual that best approached the workout and exceeded their expectations).
How this Format improves the Atmosphere for the Gym during The Open Season
This will help to keep classes running per usual for our morning members and those not competing in The Open. So, if you are a member of the gym that does not wish to compete in the CrossFit Open, morning hours will be the best time to come in. For those competing in the CrossFit Open this will be very fun and create a lot of good energy around The Open because now you have a team and friends supporting you through the 5 weeks! This is a time to celebrate your time in the gym, do a good workout, and have some fun.
Those competing in the Open is highly suggested that you come to Friday Night Lights! We are looking into providing childcare for 1-2 hours so that you can come have some fun and stay to judge and cheer on your fellow athletes. We will at the very least set up a projector playing a child-friendly movie for kids that are old enough to be left alone in the lobby area.
And yes, we understand for some of our athletes this might create a schedule conflict that makes it impossible for you to come in on Friday Night to participate in Friday Night Lights, but do not worry. Find a buddy and you both can plan to come into class and warm-up and do the class as is and then, just stay after for an extra 15min to have the other athlete go while you judge them. You can also come in and do on Saturday or Sunday as well. We will put an extra coach on Sundays at 11:30am to be an extra judge during that time period as well so that you can use Sundays as your day to do the Open Workout.
Also, those with conflicts that have to come to Friday Night, but are not competing in the Open, do not worry you can just sign up for a heat time like those competing and jump into the workout as if you took the class that night, you just won’t need a judge.
